What Is A Niche?

Occasionally I will mention niche marketing to family or friends. It’s not always intentional either, sometimes it just slips.

This invariably leads to the question of what niche marketing is. Here’s a way I try to explain it in simple terms. A portion of people that are interested in the same thing is a niche. Whether it’s dog owners, violin players, knitters, people in debt, barrel makers or just about anything else; it can be classified as a niche.

The real trick is figuring out specific to make the niche, and determining if they will spend money. Look at the first group in the examples above and you will see dog owners. It’s definitely a niche, butcan be broken down into specific classes or breeds. Working dogs, or cocker spaniel owners would be a more precise niche.

Plus, as pet owners, you can bet they are going to be spending money. Pets need shots, food, care, grooming, and so on.

So, just knowing what a niche is can be helpful, but understanding what makes a great one is what niche marketing is really all about.
